Avatar-IC An In-Character Discussion List.  This list is for interaction between Avatars, and covers such places as The Cove, The Cave, and the ever-popular and ubiquitous "Nexus Proper"
No Out-Of-Character talk or knowledge, please!
Avatar-OOC A list for PLAYERS to chat on, and discuss events, ask questions, and generally have a good time out-of-character.  This is the place to announce unofficial Nexus stuff, like social events or gatherings.  Please keep all Rules talk on Avatar-Rules (see below)
Avatar-Rules A place for people interested or with questions about the Rules to discuss such things.

Note: These lists can generate a LOT of mail if things get busy before a Con or other big event.  If you have access to more than one Email account, such as AOL, Hotmail, or Juno, you may want to subscribe separate accounts to each list.  That way, all the IC mail goes to one account, and OOC and / or News can go to a second one.

Rules of the Lists:

The following applies to both IC and OOC.  There are three cardinal rules people need to follow:

  1. READ EVERYTHING FIRST: If you have 20 messages, read them ALL before doing your replies. You may find someone has said it already, or that something has happened IC (like someone leaving the area) that makes your reaction different. On the flip side, please remember that not everyone hangs out on Email all day - give other people a chance to post and react. Don't post small novels that prevent other people from having their say / fun and getting in on the plot / discussion. It's slower, but better quality.

  2. WHEN REPLYING, CONSOLIDATE: When you post a reply, try to keep it shorter. Cut out text you don't need, and put several actions in one post, if necessary. It's better to receive one well written email than 5 or 6 short ones. (This goes with the "Read them all first" part.

  3. TAKE CARE OF OTHER PEOPLE: This is a Shared List - no one is the GM for it, and we're all here to have fun. Give other people a chance to react to your own posts before you move forward. Otherwise, why bother sharing it? In IC terms, this means one should never tell another person what their character says, does, or feels (i.e. - no "You reel back under my attack" or "You pant as you see my stunning beauty"). Tell them what they see / sense, and let them post their reaction. This even holds of things like Charm and Terror - tell the player privately OOC that they have been Charmed, and let THEM react.

[Editorial note: What follows is obviously out of date, but the principle is still illustrated...] Example: We've got a lot of people running a LOT of plots - Rianna, Talgar, Valerie, and Prince Geoffrey are missing, and others have left to do their own thing. There's William's group, the Galahad discussion, and the Reading Room, Abu Said's plot, and more. If you are going to run a plot, have respect for other plots, and don't try to crowd them out. Start a plot somewhere other than the Cove - in your own Territory, for example. Devil's Echo is a good example, as was the D. Club. It helps spread things out and keep the confusion to a minimum. (That's why the Dr. moved into the Reading Room - to get away from the William / Galahad scene and be separate.)

  4. And last, but by no means least, the Email 10 Commandments:
bulletThou shalt include a clear and specific subject line.
bulletThou shalt edit any quoted text down to the minimum thou needest.
bulletThou shalt read thine own message thrice before thou sendest.
bulletThou shalt ponder how thy recipient might react to thy message.
bulletThou shalt check thy spelling and grammar.
bulletThou shalt not curse, flame, spam, or USE ALL CAPS.
bulletThou shalt not forward any chain letter.
bulletThou shalt not rely on the privacy of email, especially from work.
bulletThou shalt not use e-mail for any illegal or unethical purpose.
bulletThou shalt when in doubt, save thy message overnight and reread it in the light of the dawn.
bulletAnd the Golden Rule of e-mail: That which thou findest hateful to receive, sendest thou not unto others.
